Why Indoor Cycling Hurts More Than Riding Outside and How to Fix It

You can spend hours riding outdoors without a second thought, yet 45 minutes on the indoor trainer leave you shifting uncomfortably in the saddle. Sound familiar? The problem isn't necessarily your fitness or your bike. Indoor cycling changes how your body experiences pressure, heat and bike positioning. Here's why it happens—and what you can do about it.

BIKE FITTING CUSTOM SADDLE INDOOR CYCLING

What you'll learn:

What you will learn icon
  • Why indoor cycling can put more sustained pressure on sensitive areas.
  • How heat, sweat and friction affect comfort on the trainer.
  • Why proper bike fitting matters even more indoors.
  • What makes an indoor-specific saddle different from an outdoor one.
  • Whether you actually need Joyseat Indoor if you already own a Joyseat.

Same Rider. Same Bike. Different Discomfort.

Ever wondered why your favourite saddle feels perfectly comfortable on the road but becomes a problem during indoor training?

Outside, you're constantly making small adjustments. You lean into corners, navigate uneven surfaces, get out of the saddle on climbs and occasionally stop pedalling. Indoors, those natural interruptions largely disappear.

Without the natural micro-adjustments of outdoor riding, indoor training leaves you locked in the exact same position for much longer.

A 2026 study published in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living explored saddle sores among competitive female cyclists. Participants identified pressure, friction and sweat as contributing factors, with some specifically describing the greater discomfort of stationary indoor riding.

These observations help explain three challenges worth addressing before your next training session.

1. Less Movement, More Pressure on the Same Spots

On an indoor trainer, your bike stays fixed in place. Without changing terrain or the natural movement of outdoor riding, you often remain seated in a similar position for much longer.

That means the same contact points carry your body weight continuously. Your sit bones, surrounding tissue and sensitive areas don't get as many opportunities for relief.

How Joyseat Indoor helps

Rather than simply adding more foam, we've adapted our fully custom 3D-printed padding specifically for sustained seated riding.

Our 3S System tailors three essential parameters to your body:

  • Size: The right width based on your sit-bone imprint and riding position.

  • Shape: A curvature that supports your anatomy and mobility.

  • Stiffness: Individually tuned zones that balance cushioning and stable support.

Joyseat Indoor goes further with deeper padding and an extra-soft 3D-printed lattice spanning the central cut-out. This flexible structure is designed to yield in sensitive areas while distributing pressure across a broader contact surface.

The result? Support designed for those long seated blocks when the kilometers add up but the scenery doesn't change.

Joyseat Indoor uses deeper padding to relieve continuous pressure on sensitive areas.

2. More Heat, More Sweat, More Friction

Outdoor riding comes with natural airflow. Indoor cycling? Not so much.

Even with a fan running, indoor sessions can get hot quickly. Increased sweating creates moisture between your skin, cycling shorts and saddle.

Combine that moisture with repetitive pedaling and small friction movements, and you have conditions that can contribute to chafing, skin irritation and saddle sores.

How Joyseat Indoor helps

Traditional foam padding often relies on a relatively closed surface. Joyseat Indoor uses a perforated surface and an open, 3D-printed lattice structure.

These create pathways for airflow through the padding, making breathability part of the saddle's design.

Of course, no saddle can replace a good fan, proper hygiene or well-fitting cycling shorts. But improving the contact point is an important part of making indoor training more comfortable.

3. Small Bike-Fit Mistakes Become Big Problems

A few millimeters can make a surprising difference.

A saddle that's slightly too high may cause your hips to rock. An incorrect tilt can shift pressure toward sensitive areas or make you slide forward. Poor fore-aft positioning can change how your weight is distributed.

Outdoors, frequent position changes may make these issues less noticeable. On the trainer, they can become impossible to ignore.

How MyVeloFit helps

Even the most advanced custom saddle cannot compensate for a poorly adjusted bike.

That's why every Joyseat Indoor purchase includes complimentary access to MyVeloFit, a digital bike-fitting tool that helps you refine your riding position at home.

The process is straightforward:

  1. Mount your bike on the trainer or use your Zwift Ride and record a video of yourself pedalling.

  2. Upload your video to MyVeloFit for an assessment of your riding position.

  3. Follow the recommendations and progressively fine-tune your setup, paying particular attention to saddle height, fore-aft position and tilt.

Small setup mistakes are magnified indoors, so every Joyseat Indoor includes MyVeloFit to perfect your position.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Saddles: What's Actually Different?

Here's a reasonable question: If a saddle is comfortable enough for indoor cycling, shouldn't it work outdoors too?

Absolutely. There's no fundamental reason why a comfortable indoor saddle couldn't also work on the road.

The difference is what the saddle is optimized for.

Joyseat Indoor prioritizes sustained seated comfort over weight savings. Built on our Joyseat Plus platform, it features a glass-reinforced nylon shell, stainless steel rails and deeper 3D-printed padding.

Starting at 220 grams, it's heavier than our carbon Joyseat Pro and Ultra models, which are designed for riders who also prioritize low weight and outdoor performance.

The additional padding may also feel different outdoors, where your position changes more frequently and excessive cushioning isn't necessarily desirable.

In short, Joyseat Indoor can work outdoors, but its construction makes the most sense where weight is less important and sustained comfort is the priority.

Prioritizes your seated comfort over saving grams.

Already Own a Joyseat? Do You Need Another One?

The short answer: Not necessarily.

If you already own a Joyseat that fits you perfectly and feels comfortable during indoor sessions, there's no reason to replace it.

But there are situations where Joyseat Indoor makes plenty of sense:

  1. One bike for outdoors and indoors? Keep your existing Joyseat. If you're happy with it, enjoy the ride.
  2. A separate indoor training bike? Having a dedicated Joyseat Indoor means you no longer need to swap saddles whenever the season or weather changes. Each bike can stay properly configured.
  3. Using Zwift Ride or Peloton? Compatibility becomes another important consideration.

Joyseat Pro and Ultra use 7×9 mm oval carbon rails, which aren't compatible with the standard Zwift Ride saddle clamp. Joyseat Indoor uses 7×7 mm round stainless steel rails, making it compatible with Zwift Ride and standard round-rail saddle clamps found on many indoor bikes, including Peloton setups. Always check your specific clamp.

Sometimes the biggest upgrade isn't replacing a saddle that already works. It's bringing the same personalized comfort to a second bike without compromising your setup.

Forget the Saddle. Enjoy the Indoor Season.

Indoor training should challenge your fitness, not your tolerance for saddle discomfort.

By addressing sustained pressure, heat and moisture, and bike positioning, you can make your indoor sessions something to look forward to rather than endure.

With your comfort and positioning fully dialed in, your time on the trainer becomes about performance rather than survival.

And when your saddle fits your body, your bike fits your position and your setup is ready whenever you are, there's only one thing left to focus on...

The ride.
